Higgins & Spencer
Celebrating 81 years in Business
Higgins and Spencer has been furnishing the gracious homes of historic Maryland since the furniture company’s inception in 1942. Just as the Eastern Shore is known for its quaint and friendly small towns like St. Michaels, Higgins and Spencer’s employees pride themselves on personal, hospitable, professional, old-fashioned customer service. The Higgins and Spencer family of talented and experienced interior designers and salespeople, floor covering experts, drapery seamstresses, window treatment specialists, furniture deliverymen, upholsterers, appliance specialists and repairmen, and office support staff work together to provide a customer-oriented, full-service team. This Higgins and Spencer family, has furnished many of the oldest Eastern Shore homes as well as the newer homes, townhouses, and condominiums throughout the Maryland and Washington, DC area. The staff also travels to outfit homes throughout the states, stretching the East Coast from Massachusetts to Florida and even as far west as California.
Because of the wide diversity of homes Higgins and Spencer visits, the store has an extensive and sophisticated selection of in-stock furniture and accessories, as well as volumes of catalogs and samples of carpets, blinds, shutters, floor coverings, and appliances. In addition, Higgins and Spencer has one of the most extensive fabric libraries on the Shore. The floor displays skillfully blend an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings.
The Eastern Shore of Maryland has always honored its rich heritage and traditions. In keeping with this, Higgins and Spencer is pleased to be a part of preserving and enhancing what is often called “The Land of Pleasant Living.”
The Stovall's
Higgins and Spencer opened it's doors in 1942 under the guidence of founder Alex Spencer.
In its 75th year, Spencer Stovall, Grandson of Alex Spencer; was appointed the President and CEO of Higgins and Spencer, Inc.
"Spence," a St. Michaels native, has spent his entire life around "the store." From playing in the warehouse as a child to returning in 2005 after graduating from Mary Washington College to work at Higgins and Spencer - Spence has this industry in this blood.
Spence is a very hands on boss . You can find him on the road most days, delivering, installing and servicing appliances, measuring and installing for window treatments and coverings, delivering furniture, and helping with flooring installation. When he's not on the road, you can find him at the store; making orders, working with the designers, and making sure everything is functioning smoothly.
Spencer graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, VA in 2005, with a Bachelors Degree in Business and Economics.
Supporting Spence in his mission to be in business for another 75 years are his Wife, Kristen and Son, Nathan.
